Mission
Founded in 1979, the University Galleries serve as a cultural resource for William Paterson University by presenting exhibitions of contemporary art, overseeing the University’s art collections, and offering educational programs. The mission of the University Galleries is to introduce diverse audiences to contemporary art and to enhance visitors’ appreciation and knowledge of the arts. The Galleries’ programming fosters critical thinking, discussion, and discovery among the University students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
Description
The University Galleries present exhibitions of contemporary art, oversee the University’s art collections, and offer educational programs. The Galleries are dedicated to exploring creative processes, furthering scholarship, and fostering a dialogue about the visual arts and culture. We invite you to visit our exhibitions, attend public programs, and participate in this conversation.
General Information
The Ben Shahn Center for the Visual Arts houses three of the University’s professionally managed exhibition spaces. The East, South, and Court Galleries total 5,000 square feet of exhibition space and present ten exhibitions per year. The programming includes solo and thematic exhibitions that engage with the University and surrounding communities and respond to significant trends in contemporary art.
